11Designing Life

Open Call, 13 February 2014
In recent years, the intersection of design and science has created and opened doors to new explorations of speculative futures, creating possible scenarios for daily life in coming years. Building upon Slovenia’s bio-art scene and pharmaceutical industry, this team will engage with various sciences and biology to strengthen and develop existing ties and create multiple new experiments.

Reaction, 24 July 2014
Design is not naturally evolutionary. In nature, evolution is the most elegant generator of form and function. Evolution lacks values, strategies or goals: it is a system by which chance mutations are rewarded with survival and reproductive success, slowly shaping everything that lives over billions of years. We asked ourselves how could we, as designers, speculate on the evolution of nature and design life. Based on recent scientific evidence, we focused on plant reproduction and hypothesized on yet-to-be-discovered life.
