Performance which comments on the relative absence of the Ljubljanica river in the city centre, as it flows silently and remains unnoticed.

Utopia comments on the relative absence of the Ljubljanica river in the city centre, as it flows silently and remains unnoticed. Utopia probes the possibilities for Ljubljana as a river city through a temporal performance and a permanent installation. In a two week-long performance, next to the Plaža river bank, a lifeguard would be employed to sit on a high lifeguard chair next to the river, patrolling absent swimmers. The banal job of the lifeguard awaiting non-existent swimmers in the polluted river offers a reminder that a potential improvement to Ljubljana's urban life runs through its centre, if only enough effort would be invested to clean it. Through the performance Utopia invites questioning: what qualities could the Ljubljanica bring to the city? How would the city vibe change if people could use the river and swim in it?

The project is prepared by Matic Vrabič, team member of Public water - public space. It will be on view from 15 to 30 September, 10.00-18.00.
